85-Year-Old Raises €2,200 for Charity Instead of Gifts

When John Redmond decided he didn't need any more birthday presents at 85, he turned his celebration into something far more meaningful.

The Ballymurn man asked guests at his birthday party to skip the gifts and donate to two charities instead. He chose Reach Ability in Enniscorthy, where his daughter Stacey attends day services, and Our Lady of Fatima School, where his granddaughter Lori May is a student.

The December evening party at Hotel Curracloe drew friends and family despite wet weather. By the end of the night, John's guests had donated €2,200 to be split between the two organizations.

Live music from John's friends Paddy, Jim, Peter, and Phil kept spirits high throughout the celebration. The evening became a perfect blend of birthday joy and community giving.

Reach Ability, one of the Southeast's largest providers of services for people with intellectual disabilities, plans to use its share for new gym equipment. The organization supports children and adults across the region and recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.

"Moments like these help us continue to grow, support our community, and make a real difference," said Shauna Nolan, marketing manager at Reach Ability. The funds will replace worn equipment in their Astro Active Centre.

John's decision shows how birthdays can become bigger than ourselves when we're ready to share them. Instead of receiving gifts he didn't need, he watched his community come together to support the places that care for his loved ones every day.

His daughter and granddaughter benefit from these charities year-round, and now those organizations can do even more for everyone they serve.
