9-Year-Old Finds Uncle's Wedding Ring Lost for 10 Years

Harper Johansen wasn't even born when her uncle's wedding ring disappeared into Lake Belle Taine back in 2016. But this July, the nine-year-old became the family hero who finally brought it home.

Stephen Meyer lost his wedding band while playing in the water with his son at the family's Minnesota cabin ten years ago. His mother-in-law Malana Johansen told the Pioneer Press the family tried everything to find it.

They dredged sand, dragged giant magnets through the water, and swam the area every summer for years. Nothing worked, and Meyer eventually bought a replacement ring.

Then Harper visited her grandparents' cabin on July 20, 2026, for the first time since she was a toddler. A severe drought had dropped the lake's water level by about 30 feet since the previous fall.

The dramatic water loss revealed something glimmering in the shallows near the shore. "She just picked it up and said, 'There's a ring!'" Malana recalled.

Harper barely had to step into the water to reach it. After a quick cleaning, the original ring slid right back onto Meyer's finger, where it still fit perfectly.

Now Meyer wears both wedding bands at once, a daily reminder of the ring that came back and the niece who found it.

The discovery brought unexpected brightness to Harper's family after they lost their home in the Southern California wildfires the year before. Finding the ring gave them something precious to celebrate during their summer vacation.

Malana says the miraculous recovery "is going to be family lore from now on." She even joked that Mother Nature might finally send rain now that the ring turned up after all these years.
