Elderly hiker Dale Sanders smiling on mountain trail with hiking poles and backpack

91-Year-Old Reclaims Appalachian Trail Record He Set at 82

🦸 Hero Alert

Dale "Grey Beard" Sanders just became the oldest person to complete the 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail at age 91. Even better, he broke his own record from 2017.

Dale Sanders just proved that age limits exist only in our heads.

At 91 years old, the Tennessee hiker finished the entire Appalachian Trail on Monday, becoming the oldest person ever to complete the grueling journey. He reached the summit of Mount Katahdin in Maine after 359 days of hiking, camping, and refusing to quit.

The numbers alone are staggering. The trail stretches 2,200 miles from Georgia to Maine, crossing 14 states along the way. Hikers gain and lose a combined 929,000 feet of elevation, which equals climbing Mount Everest and back down 16 times.

Sanders fell 71 times during his journey. Six were hard falls, including one that sent him to the hospital. Just 200 yards from the finish line, he went down again but got back up and kept moving.

Here's where the story gets even better. Sanders isn't just breaking records. He's breaking his own records.

Back in 2017, Sanders completed the trail at 82, becoming the oldest person to do it at the time. His friend M.J. "Nimblewill Nomad" Eberhart broke that record in 2021 at age 83. Sanders actually helped Eberhart finish that hike, joining him during tough stretches when his friend wanted to quit.

Then Sanders decided he wanted his title back. So he laced up his boots and hit the trail again at 90.

The journey tested him in ways even he didn't expect. During a descent in Vermont, he fell hard in a boulder field, bloodying his arms and legs. Weeks later, numbness in his left arm sent him to the hospital with what doctors feared might be a stroke but turned out to be a pinched nerve.

He briefly considered stopping. Then he changed his mind and finished what he started.

Sanders averaged about 12 miles per day with one rest day each week. He started in West Virginia last September, hiked south to Georgia through winter, then returned in spring to complete the northern section to Maine.

Why This Inspires

Sanders has spent his 80s and 90s collecting achievements that would exhaust people half his age. He's paddled the entire Mississippi River twice and became the oldest person to complete the Grand Canyon's rim-to-rim-to-rim route at 87.

But this latest accomplishment carries special meaning. Sanders was born in 1935. The Appalachian Trail wasn't completed until 1937, making him literally older than the trail he just conquered.

When asked about his plans, Sanders shows no signs of slowing down. His calendar stays full of new adventures, new goals, and new reasons to prove that the best years don't have to be behind us.

If a 91-year-old can hike 2,200 miles through mountains after falling 71 times, the rest of us are officially out of excuses.
