91-Year-Old Survivor Helped Stop Serial Killer in Texas

When Mary Annis Bartel didn't show up for exercise class in March 2018, her workout buddy knew something was wrong. The 91-year-old was found unconscious in her Texas senior living apartment after a man posing as a caretaker had tried to smother her with a pillow and stolen her jewelry.

Bartel survived what would have been the final attack in a string of at least 22 murders. From her hospital bed, she gave police the details they needed to crack the case wide open.

The attacker had knocked on her door wearing green rubber gloves, forced her onto her bed, and pressed a pillow over her head until she lost consciousness. He told her not to fight back, then disappeared with her valuables.

Police initially weren't convinced of her story. But Bartel's detailed account led them to Billy Chemirmir, who had been methodically targeting older women in wealthy senior communities between 2016 and 2018.

Chemirmir's method was chillingly consistent. He entered homes pretending to be a maintenance worker or caregiver, smothered his victims, and stole their jewelry.

What made him so successful for so long was a tragic assumption. Most people, including authorities, simply believed his victims had died of old age.

"The mentality of it was, 'They were old, and they just died,'" Shannon Dion told AARP The Magazine in 2022. Her 92-year-old mother Doris Gleason was among those believed killed by Chemirmir.

The break in the case came when police found Chemirmir's OfferUp account trying to sell Bartel's stolen ring. He was arrested, sentenced to life in prison, and died in 2023.

Why This Inspires

For years, police kept Bartel's identity secret to protect her privacy. In November 2019, she received a Citizen Hero award for her role in stopping a serial killer.

"Her involvement in this case was crucial," Police spokesman David Tilley told The Dallas Morning News in 2021. "Her role in this investigation was huge and definitely something we were very appreciative of."

Bartel has since passed away, but her family recently published a book about her life. Her story also appeared on Oxygen's Unknown Serial Killers of America, ensuring her bravery won't be forgotten.
