91-Year-Old Vermont Athlete Holds Two World Records
Flo Meiler didn't start track and field until age 60, but now at 91, she holds two world records and inspires athletes generations younger. She became the first person ever to pole vault at age 90.
At 91 years old, Flo Meiler walks into the University of Vermont track facility three times a week, sets up her own pole vault equipment, and shows college athletes what's possible.
The Shelburne, Vermont resident holds two world records in pole vault and triple jump. She was just named 2025 USA Track & Field Female Masters and Overall Masters Athlete of the Year, beating thousands of competitors nationwide.
What makes her story even more remarkable? She didn't start any of this until age 60.
Meiler's friend Barbara Jordan convinced her to try long jump at the Vermont Senior Games three decades ago. From that first jump, she was hooked.
Now she hauls her equipment to practice in a vintage Sears cart she once used to pull her children. She refuses help setting up, determined to maintain her independence and strength.
"I'm sad that I can't jump like I used to, but I really enjoy it," Meiler said. "I'm 91, I shouldn't complain."
Her training regimen remains intense. When she notices herself slowing down, she adds more exercises to her routine instead of cutting back.

Last year, Meiler became the first person in the world to pole vault at age 90. "It feels fantastic," she said.
Why This Inspires
Meiler's impact extends far beyond her medal collection, which includes 12 golds from recent competitions. University of Vermont freshman Jason Lei watches her train and feels motivated about his own future.
"I want to be moving like you when I'm older as well," Lei told her during a recent practice.
"Oh, it makes me feel like 60 again!" she responded.
Athletes of all ages approach Meiler to thank her for showing them what dedication looks like. "I really feel warm inside, because I've had so many athletes come up to me and say, 'What an inspiration you have been to me,'" she said. "That's a wonderful feeling."
Her husband Gene, married to Flo for 65 years, says her discipline attracted him from the beginning. "She's impressed me, that's for sure," he said. "In fact, that's why I married her."
Meiler credits her faith and gratitude for her continued success. "I'm very happy the good Lord has given me my health and my talent," she said.
She proves that it's never too late to discover your passion, and age is just a number when you're chasing world records.
