95-Year-Old Born in Town Hall Returns After 64 Years
Brian Baker spent his childhood living in York Town Hall where his father was caretaker for 30 years. He returned home at age 92 to the same building where he was born, met his wife at a dance, and got married.
Not many people can say they were born, raised, and married in the same town hall, but 95-year-old Brian Baker lived all three chapters of his life story in York, Western Australia.
Brian was born in York Town Hall on December 2, 1930, when his father served as the building's caretaker. The family lived in quarters attached to the ornate Edwardian building, where pressed-tin ceilings and jarrah wooden staircases became the backdrop of his childhood.
As a young boy, Brian and his brother Les would slide down the polished banisters whenever their father wasn't watching. During special events, their dad would let them sit in weighted wooden crates while he dragged them across the floor to polish it, a makeshift ride that doubled as work.
But the hall's most precious memory came when Brian attended a dance there as a young man. He spotted Margaret Salkilld sitting in the corner wearing a black lace dress that he still keeps at home today.
"One of my lady friends later said that Margaret saw me dancing and said, 'Oh gee, he dances nicely. I wish he'd ask me,' and I did," Brian recalled. The couple married in the same hall where they met, with his parents hosting their wedding reception.
After raising four children in York, Brian's career as a town clerk took the family across Western Australia to towns like Narrogin, Pinjarra, and Mandurah. He also served in the air force and worked for the federal government.
Sunny's Take
After 64 years away, Brian returned home to York three years ago at age 92. Walking through the town hall again, he pointed out exactly where Margaret sat the night they met, where his mother would watch him dance and correct his posture the next day, and where his family celebrated their wedding.
Though many old friends had passed during his years away, Brian found something he'd been missing: "I see friendship in York. It's peaceful."
The black lace dress still hangs in his wardrobe, a reminder that the best journeys sometimes lead us right back to where our hearts began.
