97-Year-Old Gets Keys After 30-Year Wait for Home

After 30 years of broken promises, 97-year-old Emily Mohapi finally held the keys to her own home last week in Soweto, South Africa.

Mohapi applied for a Reconstruction and Development Programme house in 1996 while living in the Protea South informal settlement. When the government rolled out RDP homes in her area around 2012, neighbors moved into proper houses while she remained behind in her two-room tin shack.

She had survived decades as a domestic worker under apartheid and continued tending her garden despite her age. Community members took turns caring for her as officials repeatedly ignored her housing requests.

Everything changed when DA councillor Maureen Mnisi championed her case and Daily Maverick published her story in March 2025. Provincial housing officials stepped in to address the failure, and 15 months later, Mohapi unlocked the door to her new home in Lufhereng.

"I don't know what to say to finally leave this tin which I have been staying in when people stay in houses," Mohapi said on moving day. She had been officially notified about receiving house number 1482 before, but it never happened.

Mohapi's victory shines light on a massive problem while proving that persistence and public attention can still force change. Johannesburg faces a backlog of 500,000 housing units, with 1.3 million people waiting across Gauteng province.

Pensioners routinely discover their allocated homes went to someone else. The province aimed to build just 5,923 houses in 2024/25, a fraction of what's needed.

Yet one woman's three-decade wait ended because people refused to let her story disappear. A local councillor fought for her, journalists amplified her voice, and officials finally acted.

Mohapi's new home won't solve South Africa's housing crisis, but it proves that individual lives still matter in broken systems.
