Aba, Nigeria Sheds 'Rubbish Heap' Reputation in Cleanup Win

When Pastor Paul Enenche returned to Aba, Nigeria, he asked a question that would have seemed impossible just months ago: "Where's the heap of rubbish?"

The senior pastor of Dunamis International Gospel Centre was visiting Abia State for a healing crusade in March when he noticed something shocking. Aba, the state's commercial hub once notorious for refuse dumps lining its streets, had become spotlessly clean.

"I was surprised," Enenche told crowds at the Umuahia Township Stadium. "Is this Aba that I am in, clean street? Where is the heap of rubbish on the road? None! I even saw water fountains at the roundabouts."

The dramatic cleanup is part of Governor Alex Otti's transformation of Abia State since taking office. What was once considered an embarrassing eyesore has become a point of civic pride for residents.

Enenche praised the governor for having "heart both for God and for the land," predicting that Aba's industrial revolution could turn it into "a Dubai that will make people come." He believes the state will become something Nigeria can offer the world with pride.

Governor Otti, who attended the crusade with senior government officials, acknowledged the compliments with humility. "Pastor Becky was demonstrating how clean Aba was, and I say she hasn't seen anything yet, because we are just starting," he told the crowd.

The governor pointed to other ongoing projects, including the Umuahia Central Bus Terminal, reportedly the largest in the country. Both Aba and the state capital Umuahia are "wearing a new look," he said.

The Ripple Effect

The transformation extends beyond aesthetics. Clean streets signal functioning government services, restored civic pride, and improved quality of life for millions living in Abia State.

Otti's administration has tackled infrastructure projects with no political strings attached. "This is your government, a government with no godfather, a government that God brought Himself," he told supporters, emphasizing accountability directly to citizens.

The cleanup represents a simple but powerful shift. When basic services like waste management work properly, entire communities can reimagine their future.

Otti told the crowd not to worry about critics of the changes, quoting biblical passages about rebuilding ruins and overcoming opposition. His message was clear: the transformation will continue despite resistance.
