Abandoned Mountain Lion Cub Crimson Saved by Zoo Team

A tiny mountain lion cub abandoned in the wild is getting the second chance he desperately needed, thanks to a team of dedicated wildlife rescuers and veterinarians.

Crimson, just 3 weeks old when found, had been left alone in his den in Southern California. Biologists monitored the situation closely using GPS and cameras, hoping his mother would return.

When the cub began crying out frequently and lost 10% of his body weight, rescuers knew they had to act. The National Park Service and California Department of Fish and Wildlife brought him to Los Angeles Zoo on March 25 for a full medical evaluation.

Veterinarians performed blood tests, CT scans, and a complete physical exam. While Crimson was in overall good health, doctors discovered he was missing several toes on one paw from an injury sustained in the wild.

Two days later, Flying Tails Animal Rescue flew the cub north to Oakland Zoo, where he became the facility's 33rd mountain lion rescue. The zoo's veterinary team immediately began intensive care, bottle-feeding Crimson every three hours to replicate the care his mother would have provided.

Oakland Zoo CEO Nik Dehejia captured what makes this rescue so special. "There is something so deeply moving about watching our team pour themselves so completely into a single life," he said.

The zoo's staff knows Crimson is at a delicate stage, but they're cautiously optimistic. Round-the-clock monitoring ensures the tiny cub gets exactly what he needs as he grows stronger each day.

Because mountain lion cubs typically stay with their mothers for up to 18 months to learn survival skills, Crimson cannot return to the wild. Instead, Oakland Zoo is planning something heartwarming for his future.

The team hopes to introduce Crimson to Clover, another rescued cub currently in their care. The two cubs will grow up together, giving each other the companionship they lost when separated from their mothers.

What started as a desperate situation for a tiny, starving cub has become a story of hope, compassion, and the incredible people who refuse to give up on a single life.
