ABC Seeks Storytellers With Disabilities for Paid Work
Australia's ABC is hiring emerging content creators with disabilities to produce stories for International Day of People with Disability. Selected storytellers will be paid to work with ABC producers from August 2026 to May 2027.
Australia's national broadcaster is opening doors for storytellers who rarely get the chance to tell their own stories.
ABC is calling for pitches from content creators with disabilities to produce original work that will air across its platforms on International Day of People with Disability this December 3. The program recognizes Australia's 5.5 million people with disabilities.
The network wants fresh voices exploring topics that matter to the disability community. Past projects included a Paralympian's story on regional para-athlete programs, a comedian's reels on disability representation in Australian media, and a composer's audio feature on making classical music more inclusive.
Creators can pitch stories in multiple formats. Options include short videos, audio packages, 800-word articles, or social media content for Instagram, TikTok, or Facebook.
ABC is especially interested in hearing from First Nations creators, those in regional and remote areas, and LGBTQ+ storytellers with disabilities. All participants will receive payment for their work and support from an ABC producer.
Why This Inspires
This isn't charity or awareness theater. ABC is paying creators and giving them editorial support to tell the stories they choose, not the stories someone else thinks should be told about them.
The program moves beyond inspiration narratives to tackle real issues. Topics can range from AI accessibility to disability representation in business leadership to challenges facing remote communities.
Previous participant Eli Sutherland wrote about connecting with nature as a person with disability. Comedian Loz Booth created content on barriers in para sports. These creators controlled their own narratives while reaching millions through ABC's national platform.
To apply, Australians over 18 with lived disability experience need to submit a story pitch by midnight July 8. No finished content required, just the idea and preferred format.
Applications are open at abc.net.au, with work beginning in August 2026.
