Abia Governor Takes Blame for Avoidable University Strike

When a governor stands before his people and says "I failed," it matters.

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State did exactly that on Thursday, taking full responsibility for a recent strike at Abia State University that left students and faculty in limbo. Speaking at the university's 35th anniversary celebration in Umuahia, he didn't dodge or deflect. He owned it.

The Academic Staff Union had walked out in August after waiting weeks for approved benefits that never arrived. Their demands weren't unreasonable: overdue allowances dating back to 2009, proper promotion processes, and cooperative deductions that should have been remitted. Otti had already said yes to everything.

So what went wrong? Bureaucracy.

After Otti approved the requests, administrative delays kept dragging the process out. Officials formed implementation committees for decisions that had already been vetted and budgeted. Workers watched approved benefits gather dust on desks while their financial struggles continued.

The strike lasted until August 24, when a committee led by the Secretary to the State Government finally resolved the outstanding issues. Students returned to class. Faculty got back to work. But the damage to trust had been done.

The Bright Side

Otti's apology represents something rare in Nigerian politics: genuine accountability without excuses. He didn't blame subordinates alone or claim ignorance. He named the problem clearly and promised consequences for officials who let bureaucratic delays block approved policies in the future.

His administration has invested heavily in renovating university facilities and building new ones. Now he's asking the right question: if we can fund infrastructure, why can't we promptly handle worker welfare?

The governor told the anniversary audience that workers shouldn't bear the cost of administrative failures. He warned that future delays would result in consequences for responsible officials. His message was clear: approved policies must reach the people they're meant to serve.

Students and faculty at Abia State University are back to normal now. The outstanding allowances from 2009 are being addressed. Promotions are moving forward. Cooperative deductions are being properly handled.

Sometimes progress comes from admitting when systems break down and committing to fix them for good.
