Abu Dhabi's 142-Project Climate Plan Protects Nature Through 2050

Abu Dhabi is betting big on nature and innovation to tackle climate change, unveiling a comprehensive plan that extends through 2050 and celebrates real wins already happening on the ground.

The Environment Agency Abu Dhabi announced its Climate Change Adaptation Plan for the Environment Sector 2025-2050, a roadmap containing 142 specific actions to protect the emirate's natural resources. Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, the agency's Secretary-General, shared the news around World Environment Day, explaining how the plan protects groundwater, soil, and biodiversity as essential systems supporting water and food security.

The first phase alone includes 86 projects rolling out over the next five years. The agency is already using artificial intelligence and drones to monitor environmental health, having surveyed more than 700 sites across the emirate.

Some victories are already visible. After a 35-year absence, the Arabian caracal has returned to Abu Dhabi, documented by the agency's smart monitoring technologies. This wild cat's comeback signals improving habitat conditions and successful conservation efforts.

The agency also created the emirate's first groundwater atlas, mapping more than 118,000 wells. This detailed resource helps protect precious freshwater supplies in one of the world's most water-scarce regions.
