Accra Gets 20 New Waste Bins to Fight Littering

When Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey visited Duraplast Ghana Ltd. this week with a simple request, the company didn't hesitate. Executive Director Mireille Hitti said yes to donating 20 waste bins that will be installed across the city to reduce littering and improve public health.

The bins represent more than just trash receptacles. They're part of a growing collaboration between the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and local businesses to solve real urban problems while creating jobs for residents.

Mayor Allotey explained that the Assembly will handle waste collection from the strategically placed bins, which will help curb indiscriminate dumping that currently clogs drains and creates unhealthy living conditions. The city is already planning to add more bins at key locations to expand access to proper waste disposal across the metropolis.

The mayor also issued a direct appeal to residents and visitors: stop dumping refuse in drains and public spaces. He warned that violators will face sanctions under Assembly bylaws, but emphasized that enforcement will come alongside education about responsible waste management.

Hitti said the donation reflects her company's belief that effective waste management is a shared responsibility. She committed to joining the mayor's team during the installation process, describing it as a collaborative effort to promote proper disposal habits and help residents take ownership of their environment.
