Actor Plants 650,000 Trees Across India for His Mother

At his mother's bedside in her final moments, Marathi actor Sayaji Shinde made a promise that would change the landscape of an entire state. He told her he would plant 5,000 native trees in her memory.

He had no idea that grief could grow into forests.

Today, more than 650,000 indigenous trees stand across 29 locations in Maharashtra. What started as one son's quiet tribute became Sahyadri Devrai, one of India's largest native tree movements.

Sayaji didn't choose decorative plants or ornamental gardens. He selected species that belonged to the land: banyan, peepal, tamarind, and other native trees that once defined Maharashtra's natural landscape.

But planting was never the hardest part. Keeping saplings alive was.

He quickly realized survival couldn't depend on one person. So he transformed his personal mission into a people's movement.

Villagers joined in. Volunteers traveled long distances to help water and protect saplings like family members. Local communities took ownership of patches of land that had been dry and forgotten for years.
