Actor Vijay's New Party Wins 108 Seats in Tamil Nadu

A movie star with a message just changed the political map of one of India's largest states.

C. Joseph Vijay, one of Tamil cinema's biggest actors, launched his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party and immediately became the single largest party in Tamil Nadu's state legislature. His team captured 108 of 234 seats in the May 2026 election, coming within just 10 seats of an outright majority.

The result breaks a political pattern that stood for nearly half a century. Since the 1970s, Tamil Nadu voters chose between two established parties: the DMK and AIADMK. This time, they picked a fresh alternative.

TVK earned 35% of all votes cast, pulling over 16 million votes from across different regions, communities, and backgrounds. Vijay himself ran in two districts and won both seats, in Perambur and Tiruchi East.
