Afghanistan Frees 3 Pakistani Soldiers for Ramadan

Afghanistan has released three Pakistani soldiers captured during fierce border fighting last October, marking a compassionate step toward healing relations between the troubled neighbors.

The Taliban government handed over the soldiers to a Saudi delegation that traveled to Kabul on Monday to mediate between the two countries. Government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid announced the release was timed to honor the start of Ramadan, Islam's sacred month of fasting and reflection.

The three soldiers had been held since October 12, when violent clashes erupted along the shared border. Those battles killed at least five soldiers, 25 militants, and multiple civilians while wounding hundreds more on both sides.

The fighting started after explosions rocked Kabul on October 9. The Taliban government blamed Pakistan for the attacks and vowed retaliation, setting off the worst violence between the countries in recent years.

Qatar stepped in to broker a ceasefire that calmed the immediate danger. However, follow-up peace talks in Istanbul stalled without producing a lasting agreement, leaving relations tense and uncertain.

This release shows how faith and diplomacy can create openings even in deeply strained relationships. By choosing the start of Ramadan as the moment to return these soldiers to their families, Afghan officials emphasized shared values over continued conflict.

Saudi Arabia's willingness to shuttle between the capitals demonstrates how regional partners can help cool tensions before they spiral. The gesture keeps communication channels open at a time when both countries face enormous challenges and neither can afford prolonged instability.

While Pakistan has not yet commented publicly on the release, the safe return of captured soldiers removes one obstacle to eventual reconciliation. For three families, Ramadan brings the gift of reunion after months of uncertainty and fear.
