Africa and Europe Link 1,900 Innovators to Scale Solutions
A groundbreaking partnership between Africa and Europe is turning promising research into real businesses and jobs through innovation fairs, digital platforms, and direct support for entrepreneurs. More than half of the supported initiatives have already created between one and 100 jobs each.
Imagine having a brilliant idea that could solve a real problem, but no way to turn it into reality. That's the gap closing between Africa and Europe as the two continents build bridges for innovators to transform research into products, services, and thriving businesses.
The African Union and European Union launched a ten-year Innovation Agenda in July 2023 with a simple goal: help great ideas become practical solutions. The partnership focuses on public health, green transition, innovation and technology, and building scientific capacity across both continents.
Between 2022 and 2025, annual Innovation Fairs brought together 1,900 participants including researchers, startups, investors, and companies. These events showcased 139 innovative solutions and created real connections that help turn concepts into market-ready products. The next fair happens November 25 in Italy, focusing specifically on food security and sustainable agriculture.
But the support doesn't stop when the fair ends. Selected startups receive personalized help with investment readiness, intellectual property protection, mentoring, pilot funding, and navigating complex regulations. This hands-on assistance removes the obstacles that often prevent promising innovations from reaching people who need them.
Digital platforms extend this support year-round. The Africa-Europe Innovation Platform connects organizations across both continents, while the ENRICH in Africa Center in Cape Town links entrepreneurs with investors through its virtual community. The Africa-Europe Digital Innovation Bridge helps digital ecosystems work together more effectively.

Thematic workshops tackle specific challenges innovators face, from securing financing to understanding artificial intelligence and building climate resilience. By August 2026, six workshops had engaged 1,675 participants sharing practical knowledge and real-world experience.
The Ripple Effect
The economic impact is already visible and growing. First-year monitoring shows that 56% of assessed initiatives created jobs, with some generating more than 100 positions. These aren't just statistics but real employment opportunities stemming from research and innovation cooperation.
The Innovation Agenda Dashboard now serves as a living inventory of programs, projects, and partnerships. It helps people discover existing initiatives and find collaboration opportunities, making the innovation ecosystem easier to navigate for everyone involved.
Ministers from both continents will meet in 2027 to review progress and plan the next phase of cooperation. The meeting will build on successful connections already made and explore new ways to strengthen the path from research lab to marketplace.
What started as disconnected ideas across two continents is becoming a coordinated effort to solve real problems, create meaningful jobs, and build sustainable businesses that serve communities on both sides of the world.
