Africa Installing Record 17GW of Solar Power in 2026

Africa is about to light up like never before, with enough new solar capacity to match a decade's worth of electricity demand growth in a single year.

The continent will install a record 17 gigawatts of solar power in 2026, a stunning 45% jump from last year, according to new research from Ember and African Tech Futures Lab. This marks the third consecutive year of record-breaking solar installations across Africa.

The growth is happening almost everywhere. Two-thirds of African nations, 36 out of 54 countries, are expected to install their highest-ever amounts of solar power this year.

Some countries are seeing explosive growth. The Democratic Republic of the Congo's solar installations are forecast to surge 544% compared to last year. Zimbabwe follows with a 282% increase, while Egypt is set to grow 176%.

The numbers translate into real power for real people. The new capacity will generate around 23 terawatt-hours of electricity annually, roughly equivalent to the continent's average yearly electricity demand growth over the entire past decade.

The Ripple Effect

Most of this solar revolution is happening close to home. Three-quarters of the solar capacity added between 2023 and 2025 came from distributed generation, meaning small-scale systems on rooftops and in communities rather than massive solar farms.

This grassroots solar boom is growing so fast that official statistics can't keep up with it. Many installations aren't even being captured in government records, meaning the real impact could be even larger than reported.

Africa is also starting to build its own solar manufacturing muscle. Production capacity across the continent is forecast to quadruple to around 3.5 gigawatts in 2026 as new facilities open in Egypt and Tanzania. While 94% of panels still come from China today, local manufacturing is finally taking root.

The solar surge is happening despite infrastructure challenges that would slow progress elsewhere. Researchers note that better registration and permitting systems will help governments and grid operators track and support the rapidly expanding market, potentially accelerating growth even further.

For a continent where hundreds of millions still lack reliable electricity access, this solar wave represents more than clean energy. It's economic opportunity, educational access, healthcare improvements, and quality of life gains spreading one panel at a time.
