African School Opens UK Campus, Lagos Plans 36 New Schools

A Nigerian education success story is making history across two continents, proving that African excellence knows no borders.

Westerfield College, a leading sixth form institution, has achieved something remarkable. It's now the first wholly African-owned school to establish a campus in the United Kingdom, opening new doors for students across Nigeria and beyond.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu celebrated the milestone during a courtesy visit by Westerfield's CEO Michael Dosunmu at Marina House on Thursday. The meeting marked the school's one-year anniversary and its participation in the International Education Fair.

"This is a remarkable achievement that enhances our country's international education profile," Sanwo-Olu said. He praised how the expansion showcases Nigeria and Lagos on the world stage.

The governor didn't just celebrate progress abroad. He announced that 36 new schools will be commissioned in Tolu, Ajegunle, in the coming months to expand access to quality classrooms across the state.

"No child in Lagos State should be left out of school," Sanwo-Olu emphasized. Education remains a core pillar of the state's development priorities under the THEMES+ agenda.

Lagos has transformed its higher education landscape too. The state has expanded from one state-owned university to three, alongside creating a dedicated Ministry of Tertiary Education to strengthen oversight.

The Ripple Effect

Westerfield's UK campus in Worcester offers Cambridge A Levels, University Foundation Programmes, and specialized tracks in medicine, STEM, business, law, and computing. The school combines British academic standards with a student-centered approach that reflects its African roots.

The college is running a summer camp programme across three sessions from July 20 to August 29. Students get exposure to British culture, leadership development, sports, and networking opportunities designed to build confidence and global awareness.

Dosunmu explained the programme introduces families to the British education system while helping students develop skills for success anywhere in the world. It's about creating pathways, not just classrooms.

The dual announcements show education working as it should: building bridges internationally while ensuring nobody gets left behind at home.
