Africa's Largest Airport to Welcome 110M Passengers by 2030

Ethiopia just broke ground on what will become Africa's largest airport, and the design looks like something from a sci-fi movie.

The Bishoftu International Airport, designed by renowned Zaha Hadid Architects, sits just south of Addis Ababa and spans an incredible 7 million square feet. The building's unique X-shaped layout isn't just for show. It actually helps passengers find their gates faster by creating clear sight lines throughout the terminal.

Each arm of the X features different colors and materials inspired by Ethiopia's diverse regions, making navigation even easier. A central spine connects everything, cutting down walking distances for travelers rushing to make connecting flights.

Ethiopian Airlines Group commissioned the project, which opens its first phase in 2030. When fully complete, the airport will handle 110 million passengers annually and park 270 aircraft. That's more than double the capacity of South Africa's OR Tambo International Airport, currently Africa's busiest.

The airport tackles climate concerns head-on with a LEED Gold sustainability rating. Natural ventilation keeps temperatures comfortable without excessive air conditioning. Solar panels throughout the complex will generate power on site, while collected rainwater from runways gets stored in wetlands for reuse.

Builders are using locally sourced materials and modular construction techniques to speed up the process. The design includes semi-enclosed spaces where passengers can enjoy Ethiopia's pleasant weather while waiting for flights. Drought-resistant native plants will landscape the grounds without wasting water.

This airport represents far more than just a travel hub. It positions Ethiopia as a major connector between Africa, Asia, and Europe, creating thousands of construction jobs now and permanent positions later. The focus on local materials supports Ethiopian businesses and reduces the project's carbon footprint.
