Africa's Richest Man to Give $12B to Charity

Africa's richest man just announced one of the continent's most ambitious charitable pledges, and his family is fully on board.

Aliko Dangote plans to donate one-third of his $36.5 billion fortune to philanthropy, his daughter Halima revealed in a recent Bloomberg interview. Based on current estimates, that amounts to more than $12 billion dedicated to charitable causes.

The public backing from Dangote's three daughters offers a rare window into how Africa's wealthiest family is planning for the future. While many billionaire families keep succession plans private, the Dangotes are openly sharing how they'll balance growing their business empire with creating lasting social impact.

Dangote built his fortune through the Dangote Group, Africa's largest industrial conglomerate. The company produces cement, fertilizer, sugar, salt and food products, and operates a massive 650,000-barrel-per-day petroleum refinery. His daughters Halima, Fatima and Mariya now oversee key operations as the family works toward turning the business into a $100 billion enterprise by 2030.

The billionaire, who turns 70 next year, has long emphasized that wealth should create meaningful change. In previous interviews, he said he spends more on charitable causes than on himself and wants to "make the most impact on the world" during his lifetime.

The Aliko Dangote Foundation has already invested $1.25 billion in programs across Africa since 1994. The foundation supports vaccine programs, school feeding initiatives, maternal and child health projects, and emergency disaster relief across Nigeria and neighboring countries.

Recent projects include a $688 million commitment to strengthen Nigeria's education sector. The foundation has partnered with organizations like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to expand its reach and impact.

The scale of this new pledge puts Dangote among a select group of global billionaires committing substantial portions of their wealth to charity. Few commitments on the African continent have approached this magnitude, making it a watershed moment for philanthropy in the region.
