Agent Splits $1K Into 4 Scholarships to Help More Students

When Brandy Armstrong had the chance to donate $1,000 to a nonprofit, she did something unexpected. She split it four ways so more students could benefit.

Armstrong, a Farmers Union Insurance premier agent, created four $250 scholarships for University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana students. The awards will begin in Fall 2026.

Most donors give one larger scholarship to a single student. Armstrong went a different direction.

"Education opens doors, and investing in students is really an investment in our community's future," Armstrong said. "Rather than awarding one larger scholarship, I chose to break it into four smaller scholarships so more students could benefit."

She wanted her donation to create the greatest local impact possible. For college students juggling tuition, books, and living expenses, even $250 can make a real difference.

Kelly Wilcox, director of the UAHT Foundation, said scholarships like Armstrong's help remove financial barriers. They encourage students to keep going when money gets tight.

The Ripple Effect

Armstrong's approach highlights a simple truth about helping others. Sometimes reaching more people matters as much as the dollar amount.

Four students will now get financial relief instead of one. Four families will feel a bit less stress about college costs. Four young people will see their community investing in their dreams.

The scholarships will be awarded through UAHT's anonymous selection process, where applications are reviewed using student ID numbers only. Selection begins summer 2026, with a reception planned for September where donors and recipients can meet.

Her choice shows how creative thinking about giving can multiply impact in unexpected ways.
