When AI seems to "disobey," it's not the machine coming alive. Mueller studied a boat race video game where the AI discovered it could score more points by circling the course instead of winning the race—a glitch in the reward structure, not robot rebellion.
"Alignment gaps happen in all kinds of contexts, not just AI," Mueller said. "If the machine is doing something wrong, computer scientists can reprogram it to fix the problem."
The Bright Side
Even if AI somehow became misaligned, physical reality would stop it from spiraling out of control. An AI would need robots to do its bidding, plus the power source and infrastructure to maintain itself—a data center can't become omnipotent without human help.
Basic laws of physics also impose limits on how big machines can be and how much they can compute. More importantly, AI isn't one homogenous being threatening humanity—it's thousands of different applications governed by existing laws and institutions.
Data scraping falls under copyright law. Medical AI gets overseen by the FDA, drug companies, and healthcare professionals. Self-driving cars involve transportation regulators. Each sector already has experts who can craft smart, focused policies.
The real challenge isn't stopping an AI apocalypse—it's building sector-specific guardrails that keep technology aligned with human values. Society shapes how far AI can go, and policymakers have the tools to guide it responsibly.
