AI Giant Anthropic Joins $915M Carbon Removal Push

The artificial intelligence industry just took a surprising step toward cleaning up its environmental footprint.

Anthropic, the company behind Claude AI, joined Frontier, a carbon removal coalition originally founded by tech giants like Stripe, Google, and Shopify. While Google was already a founding member, Anthropic is the first pure AI company to sign on, contributing to a new $915 million funding round that nearly doubles Frontier's total commitments to $1.8 billion.

The timing matters. AI companies have been racing to secure massive amounts of energy to power their systems, and not all of those deals have been environmentally friendly. Anthropic hasn't released a sustainability report yet and has said it takes an "all of the above" approach to energy, which usually means buying power from polluting sources alongside cleaner options.

So what does Frontier actually do? The coalition vets carbon removal companies and signs long-term contracts with the most promising ones. Since launching in 2022, Frontier has contracted nearly $700 million across more than 50 projects that will remove 1.8 million tons of carbon from the atmosphere using technologies like direct air capture, ocean treatments, and enhanced rock weathering.

Companies use these carbon removal credits to offset emissions they can't eliminate yet, like business travel. It's similar to how profits balance out debts on a financial statement.

The Ripple Effect

Frontier's latest announcement reveals an important evolution. The coalition is shifting from many small experimental bets to fewer, larger commitments. New contracts will run eight to 10 years and focus on projects capable of removing at least a gigaton (one billion metric tons) of CO2 annually.

There's a catch, though. Companies are making clear they won't fund carbon removal forever. Frontier now requires that any project it backs must show a path to government funding or support. They're essentially building the industry while hoping governments will eventually take over the financial responsibility.

The UN's climate panel says carbon removal technology will be necessary to reach net zero emissions globally. Frontier is contracting projects as far out as 2040, betting that by then, governments will have stepped up.

For now, tech companies are doing the heavy lifting, and Anthropic's decision to join suggests even the energy-hungry AI industry recognizes it needs to be part of the solution.
