AI Helps Doctors Diagnose 18 Kids with Rare Diseases

Eighteen families finally have answers about their children's mysterious illnesses, thanks to artificial intelligence working alongside doctors at Boston Children's Hospital.

Researchers teamed up with OpenAI to analyze the genomes of 376 children with undiagnosed rare diseases. The AI identified nearly 5% of new diagnoses, solving cases that had puzzled medical teams for years.

The technology found answers for 10 kids with rare neurodevelopmental diseases, four with neuromuscular disorders, and two with early childhood psychosis. It even identified the diseases that caused two children's sudden deaths, giving their families closure.

Here's why this matters: analyzing thousands of genes to find one tiny error normally takes doctors several days of painstaking work. The human genome contains about 20,000 protein-coding genes, making the search comparable to finding a needle in a haystack.

The AI model digested each patient's genome, clinical notes, symptoms, and a filtered gene list. Then it worked tirelessly through pages of genetic data that would exhaust even the most dedicated human researcher.

"It's a game changer," said Catherine Brownstein, the lead researcher. "Considering how many times these had already been analyzed, that's a huge number, and each one means an answer for a family."
