AI Neck Device Helps Stroke Survivors Speak Again

Researchers from Beihang University in China and the University of Cambridge just changed the game. They developed "Revoice," a comfortable neck-worn device that translates throat vibrations and muscle movements into clear, emotionally expressive speech.

The technology works like magic but relies on solid science. Sensors on an elastic band detect tiny movements as users silently mouth words, picking up vibrations from throat muscles and pulses from the carotid artery. An AI system then wirelessly receives this data and translates it into natural-sounding speech that captures not just words, but emotional intent.

Five stroke patients tested the device using a 47-word vocabulary of common phrases. The results were stunning: 96% accuracy for individual words and 97% for complete sentences. Even better, participants reported 55% higher satisfaction compared to older word-by-word systems that sounded robotic and slow.

The AI can be customized to match each user's communication style. If someone mouths "Go hospital now," the system can expand it into a fuller statement like "I still don't feel well or comfortable. Can we go to the hospital now?" This flexibility means less strain on weakened vocal muscles while maintaining clear communication.

Beyond the technology itself, this device addresses a painful misconception. Many people wrongly assume that stroke survivors with speech problems have lost their mental sharpness. The truth is they often understand everything perfectly but just need more time or different tools to respond.

The Revoice device restores not just communication but dignity. Users can express emotional nuance, making conversations feel natural instead of mechanical. The long-lasting battery and comfortable design mean people can wear it all day without thinking about it.

Researchers are already expanding their work. They plan to increase the vocabulary size and test the device with more diverse groups of dysarthria patients across different languages and cultural backgrounds. The goal is ensuring the technology works for everyone who needs it, regardless of severity or symptom variation.
