AI Reads X-Rays in Minutes, Helps Doctors Save Time

Radiologists may soon have a powerful new assistant that can read chest X-rays and draft reports in seconds.

Aidoc, a medical AI company used in more than 2,000 hospitals worldwide, just received breakthrough device designation from the Food and Drug Administration for its First Read technology. The system analyzes chest X-rays and generates preliminary report text covering more than 100 different medical findings.

The technology doesn't replace doctors. Every report still requires a radiologist's review and signature before it becomes official. Instead, it handles the initial heavy lifting of scanning images and documenting what it detects.

Aidoc CEO Elad Walach says the goal is simple: reduce the time doctors spend on reporting and interpretation. That means radiologists can focus more attention on complex cases and patient care rather than repetitive documentation tasks.

The FDA's breakthrough designation is a big deal. The agency reserves this status for devices that could provide more effective treatment or diagnosis for life threatening or debilitating conditions. It fast tracks the review process and gives companies more opportunities for feedback as they work toward full approval.

The Ripple Effect

This innovation arrives at a crucial time for healthcare. Hospitals face mounting pressure from staff shortages and overwhelming workloads. Technologies that can handle routine tasks without sacrificing quality could help medical professionals avoid burnout while maintaining high standards of care.

Aidoc built First Read using the same architecture behind another successful product that triages multiple findings in CT scans. The company raised $150 million in April 2026 specifically to advance these AI models, signaling strong investor confidence in AI assisted medicine.

The timing aligns with a broader shift in medical technology. Companies are increasingly exploring generative AI, the same type of technology that powers ChatGPT, to assist with patient care. On the same day as Aidoc's announcement, another company called UpDoc received FDA clearance for a patient facing AI tool that helps manage chronic conditions like Type 2 diabetes between doctor visits.

While the FDA hasn't finalized its full framework for regulating generative AI in healthcare, the agency is actively engaging with developers. It hosted advisory panels and issued draft guidance on AI transparency, bias mitigation, and post market monitoring in early 2025.

For hospitals already using Aidoc's technology, First Read represents the next evolution in AI assisted radiology. The system promises to deliver consistent, thorough preliminary reads while leaving final judgment where it belongs: with trained medical professionals.
