The study tracked mammograms collected between January 2008 and April 2019 across four Swedish regions. Among the women studied, 12,072 (38.5 percent) eventually received a breast cancer diagnosis, with a median age of 57.6 years at screening.
The AI systems showed impressive early detection rates. Six years before diagnosis, they identified between 19 and 19.7 percent of cancers. Four years out, that jumped to 23.3 to 25.2 percent. Two years before diagnosis, the strongest system caught 39.3 percent of future cases.

Even more remarkable, elevated risk scores appeared up to 10 years before diagnosis in 12.7 to 17 percent of cases, depending on which AI model was used. The technology spots changes in breast tissue too subtle for human eyes to catch.
