🦸 Hero Alert

Major Jonathan Buckingham balances combat missions with breaking quirky world records, from fire knife spinning on balance boards to bursting 200 balloons with a nail. His nonprofit turns every record into sports equipment for underfunded youth programs.

An Air Force pilot who flew 120 combat missions has found an unusual second calling: breaking world records while balancing on moving boards with flames spinning inches from his face.

Major Jonathan Buckingham has set 17 Guinness World Records, ranging from pure athleticism to wonderfully weird skills. His achievements include the fastest time to travel to all seven continents, most fire knife spins on a balance board, and the fastest time to put on 10 socks.

The Honolulu native started his Air Force career as a KC-135 Stratotanker pilot, flying five deployments to the Middle East between 2012 and 2017. Today, he works as a program manager at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts, delivering critical software to warfighters who need decision-making advantages in the field.

But Buckingham's record breaking isn't just about glory. He founded the World Record Breakers Club, a nonprofit that transforms every quirky achievement into fundraising for underfunded youth sports programs.

"Some of them are pure athleticism, and others are completely skills based," Buckingham said. One record required blowing up 200 balloons and arranging them in 100 rows, then bursting them all with a nail as fast as possible. The setup alone took six hours.

Fellow airmen have joined the fun. Captain Adam Farah helped Buckingham set the record for most catches of a medicine ball while wearing boxing gloves in one minute during a deployment to Korea. "His reasoning behind it is awesome," Farah said.

The Ripple Effect

The nonprofit has already donated around $2,000 worth of equipment and books to organizations from Connecticut to South Africa. Each record attempt generates attention and donations, turning bizarre athletic feats into basketball hoops, soccer balls, and reading materials for kids who need them most.

Buckingham has three more records pending review and continues hunting for new challenges. His collection includes everything from museum visits to basketball bounces, from pinata breaking to plank position catches.

"We're doing something fun and something cool with these world records," he said. "Hopefully, we garner some inspiration for the children, but then also raise funds to buy sports equipment."

One combat pilot is proving that breaking records can also break barriers for kids who need champions.
