Air Force Sergeant Earns Pro Golf Status After 5 Years
After four attempts over five years, Nigerian Air Force Sergeant Agboola Kolawole has achieved his dream of joining the Professional Golfers' Association of Nigeria. He's now determined to become one of Africa's best golfers while training the next generation.
After five years of trying and falling short, Nigerian Air Force Sergeant Agboola Kolawole finally heard the words he'd been dreaming of: he's now a professional golfer.
Kolawole is among more than 40 golfers who recently qualified for membership in the Professional Golfers' Association of Nigeria. For the Air Force sergeant and member of the Sunday Kelvin Aneke Golf Club in Lagos, this fourth attempt at the qualifying exam finally brought success.
"I've been working to become a member of PGAN for five years now, but I kept failing," Kolawole said. "God made this year special for me by making it possible."
The breakthrough came after his commanders gave him something invaluable: time. Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, the Chief of Air Staff, released candidates early to prepare properly for the rigorous qualifying tests.
"They gave us time to practice and study very well before the exams, and this is why we were able to pass," Kolawole explained. The Nigerian Air Force's Director of Sports also provided crucial support to help sports specialists like Kolawole pursue their professional goals.

The Ripple Effect
Kolawole's new professional status means more than personal achievement. He can now officially train younger players, operate a golf shop, and contribute to growing the sport across Nigeria.
"This certification will also enable me to give back to the game," he said. "Now I can help train and groom younger players for the future."
Two fellow Air Force members from his club, Flight Sergeant Simon Achi and Adedokun James, also passed the qualifying exam. Other successful candidates include golfers from clubs in Ibadan and Ikoyi, creating a fresh wave of professionals ready to coach, compete, and develop golf nationwide.
Inspired by Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy, Kolawole has set his sights high: becoming the best in Nigeria and Africa.
Five years of persistence just opened a door that will help countless others walk through.
