Air New Zealand Launches Sleep Pods for Economy Flyers
Starting in 2026, economy passengers on 17-hour flights can rent lie-flat sleeping pods for $215 per session. The airline's Skynest bunks offer a world-first solution to making ultra-long-haul travel more comfortable for everyone.
Economy passengers finally have a way to sleep comfortably on one of the world's longest flights without paying thousands for business class.
Air New Zealand will launch Skynest in November 2026, offering six full-length sleeping pods tucked into the aisle of its Auckland to New York route. Economy and premium passengers can book a four-hour session in these lie-flat bunks for about $215, in addition to their regular seat.
The sleeping pods come with fresh bedding, privacy curtains, ambient lighting, and a comfort kit including eye masks, skincare, earplugs, and socks. Passengers will still need their regular seats for the 17-hour journey but can escape to a pod for a proper rest.
The airline developed practical rules for the cozy quarters. No double-bunking, no eating snacks in bed, and no sneaking in children. The guidelines also ask travelers to go easy on strong perfumes since everyone shares the tight space.
Snoring, however, gets a pass. The airline acknowledges that statistically someone will snore, and that's perfectly natural. That's why everyone gets earplugs.

Why This Inspires
This innovation addresses a real problem that affects millions of travelers. Long-haul flights have traditionally forced passengers to choose between expensive business class or sleepless nights in cramped seats.
Air New Zealand CEO Nikhil Ravishankar explained that for a country as remote as New Zealand, making the journey manageable matters. Getting people willing to spend long hours in the air helps connect the island nation to the world.
The airline isn't alone in reimagining economy comfort. United Airlines plans to offer lie-flat row options starting in 2027. Qantas will add a wellness zone for its upcoming Sydney to London route, which will become the world's longest commercial flight.
These changes suggest airlines are finally listening to what economy passengers actually need: rest. Not fancy meals or entertainment systems, just a chance to arrive feeling human after crossing multiple time zones.
The Skynest pods become available for booking on May 18 for flights beginning in November 2026. Two sessions will be offered per flight initially, with each passenger limited to one four-hour slot.
Making long-haul travel accessible to more people opens up the world in new ways.
