Alabama College Honors 230 Students at 60th Celebration

Gadsden State Community College just wrapped up its 60th Annual Honors Day, celebrating more than 230 students who turned their dreams into degrees despite the odds. The April ceremonies across the Anniston and Wallace Drive campuses honored academic excellence, leadership, and the kind of resilience that reminds us why education matters.

Three students took home the President's Cup, the college's highest honor. Erin McGuire of Piedmont earned recognition for her academic work and dedication to tutoring fellow students while pursuing her degree in Health Information Technology. Kayleigh Lee of Heflin will graduate with her nursing degree and head straight into emergency care. Braxton Bussie of Talladega maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA in Industrial Automation and already has his career path set with Honda.

But perhaps the most powerful moment came when Annelise Feazell of Piedmont received the Outstanding Achievement Award. After losing her mother, Feazell stepped up to care for her younger siblings while continuing her college education. She didn't just survive the challenge. She thrived, maintaining strong grades, staying active in student programs, and keeping her eyes on her goal of becoming a diagnostic medical sonographer.

College president Alan Smith presented the awards alongside faculty members who watched these students navigate everything from demanding coursework to personal hardships. The ceremonies included departmental awards, Cardinal Foundation scholarships, and Rising Scholar Awards that recognized students who showed both academic strength and community involvement.
