Runners participating in community 5K race to support free health clinic in Cullman Alabama

Alabama High Schooler Launches 5K to Fund Free Health Clinic

🦸 Hero Alert

A Cullman teenager turned his dream of helping others into a community 5K race that will fund free healthcare for neighbors in need. The Run for Good event kicks off June 27, with every dollar supporting the Good Samaritan Health Clinic.

When Reed Flores told his dad he wanted to make a real difference in his community, he didn't just talk about it. The upcoming Cullman High School senior created an entire fundraising race to support free healthcare for people who need it most.

Flores Eyecare will host the inaugural Run for Good 5K and Fun Run on Saturday, June 27, at 7 a.m. All proceeds benefit the Good Samaritan Health Clinic, which provides free medical care to local residents.

"This run actually came to fruition due to an idea my son had last year," said Romero Flores, owner of Flores Eyecare and Reed's father. "He wanted to find a way to impact the community in a positive way."

The race starts at the clinic's future home on Veterans Drive in Cullman. Runners will pass beloved local spots like the Busy Bee Cafe and Mary Carter Store before crossing the finish line.

Reed, who hopes to pursue medicine after graduation, approached clinic director Jolanda Hutson with his idea. She immediately agreed to partner on the event.

The Ripple Effect

The timing couldn't be better for the Good Samaritan Health Clinic. The organization is working to complete its new facility while continuing to serve patients who can't afford traditional healthcare.

Every $30 registration fee goes directly toward medical care, equipment, and the clinic's expansion. Runners receive a T-shirt, race packet, and finisher medal, while top finishers in each age division take home awards.

The Flores family hopes this becomes an annual tradition. "Part of why our family has loved Cullman and the surrounding areas so much is because of the people here and the way they support each other," Romero said.

Race day registration opens at 6 a.m., with the 5K starting at 7 a.m. and a family-friendly Fun Run at 7:50 a.m. People who can't attend can still donate through the registration website.

One teenager's idea is about to put hundreds of feet on the pavement for free healthcare.
