Alabama Lodge Honors Students for Patriotism and Service

😊 Feel Good

A Pelham civic organization celebrated young people making their communities better through essays, athletics, and leadership. Local students took home scholarships and state-level awards for their dedication to service.

When fifth-grader Rosamund Tracey wrote about what serving her country means, she had no idea her words would earn top honors in the entire state of Alabama.

The Pelham Ridge Elementary student won first place in Alabama's Elks Americanism Essay Contest for her division. On May 4, she joined dozens of other young achievers at the Cahaba Valley Elks Lodge Youth Banquet in Pelham for an evening celebrating students who are making their mark.

The annual event recognizes students involved in programs that build character, leadership, and civic pride. This year's honorees included essay writers, basketball shooters, JROTC cadets, and scholarship winners from across Shelby County and beyond.

Bruce Hoffman earned second place at the state level in the Hoop Shoot free throw competition after winning his local division. The contest brings students together for friendly competition while developing athletic skills and sportsmanship.

Three JROTC cadets received special recognition for their leadership and community service. Diana Lavallet from Hoover High School, Audrey Sullivan from Thompson High School, and Takera Smoot from Vincent High School stood out among their peers for mentoring others and giving back to their neighborhoods.

The evening also included scholarship presentations that will help two graduating seniors pursue their dreams. Daniel Collins of Oak Mountain High School received a $2,500 scholarship from the Alabama Elks State Association. Sam Lollar of Leeds High School earned the $2,000 Garcia Myers Memorial Scholarship.

The Ripple Effect

Behind these student achievements stands a team of volunteers who organize fundraisers, coordinate with schools, and spread the word about opportunities. Lodge member Sharon Gaydon credits these community members with ensuring local youth know about programs designed to help them grow.

The essay contest alone has drawn more than 800 entries over the years, including multiple district and state winners from Shelby County schools. Each entry represents a young person taking time to think deeply about citizenship, service, and what it means to contribute to something bigger than themselves.

Parents and families play a crucial role too. Several honorees mentioned how their families encouraged them to participate and supported their efforts throughout the process.

From writing about patriotism to practicing free throws to leading fellow cadets, these students are building skills that will serve them for a lifetime while inspiring others to do the same.
