Alabama Teen Breaks State Record with 13 Track Championships

Eva Armstead remembers walking through Hazelwood gym as a little girl, staring up at the banners of NFL legends on the walls. She told her friends she'd be up there one day too.

Last month in Gulf Shores, the Hatton High School senior didn't just win her final state track meet. She rewrote Alabama's record books.

Armstead ran the 400-meter dash in 53.31 seconds, shattering the Class 4A-7A outdoor state meet record by more than 2.5 seconds. Her time ranks among the top 15 in the entire country this year for high school runners.

"We went to the winner's circle and the announcer was like, 'That's a state record,'" Armstead recalled. "Everybody just starts screaming and yelling. My family's crying, I instantly just broke down."

That same day, she also won state championships in the 200-meter and 100-meter dashes. The triple victory brought her career total to 13 state championships, more rings than she has fingers.

The journey started in Town Creek, Alabama, a place so small it has just one gas station and a Dollar General. People often asked Armstead how she could achieve so much coming from such a tiny town.

"Explaining it to them just makes me happy to be where I'm from," she said.

The nerves hit hard before that record-breaking 400-meter race. Armstead arrived 15 minutes before her run and overheard other athletes talking about "some girl that was really fast" without realizing she was standing right there.

She'd won every 400-meter race last season, finishing over a second and a half ahead of her nearest competitor. But this time, she just wanted to break into the 53-second mark.

Why This Inspires

Armstead's success proves that greatness doesn't require a zip code. The named Track Athlete of the Year for the third consecutive year, she graduated as one of the most decorated athletes in her county's history.

Now when she goes out with friends, strangers stop to say hello. "Everybody around me swears that I'm like a mini-celebrity," she laughed. "My best friend says 'Every time we go somewhere, somebody always has to speak to you.'"

The little girl who once imagined her name on Hazelwood's walls has earned her place among the legends, and she's heading to the University of Alabama in Huntsville to write the next chapter of her story.
