Alabama Tenants Raise $600 for Student Scholarships

When Peggy Fowler Carroll told residents at Meadowcrest Apartments about a scholarship fund for students in low-income housing, they didn't hesitate. The Luverne, Alabama community rallied together and raised $600 to help young people chase their college dreams.

The donation supports the Council for Affordable and Rural Housing (CARH) Scholarship program. The fund awards eight scholarships each year to students living in low-income housing properties across all 50 states.

For years, Meadowcrest residents have organized fundraisers for the Alzheimer's Association. But when they learned about the scholarship opportunity, they immediately wanted to shift their focus to helping the next generation.

"I think it's just a cool thing that you have older people supporting younger people," said Rodney Corley, CARH president. "That's what this does is gives an opportunity to someone who may need it."

This story proves that generosity has nothing to do with how much money you have. These residents, living in affordable housing themselves, chose to invest in someone else's future rather than keep the funds for their own community needs.

"Sometimes somebody just may need a little help and encouragement," Corley said. "It's about changing lives."
