Alabama's Free EV Test Drive Brings Electric Future Home

😊 Feel Good

The University of Alabama is bringing electric vehicles to the people with a free test drive event that lets anyone experience the future of transportation. It's part of a bigger push to help Alabamians discover why thousands are already making the switch.

Alabamians curious about electric vehicles can finally get behind the wheel without walking into a dealership, thanks to a new state program launching this Monday.

Drive Electric Alabama, sponsored by the University of Alabama, is hosting its first public EV test drive event at the Hoover Met from 3 to 7 p.m. The free event lets anyone try electric trucks, sedans, and sports cars with zero pressure to buy.

"Most Alabamians have never had the chance to drive an electric vehicle," said Michael Staley, president of the Alabama Clean Fuids Coalition. "Nothing compares to putting your foot on the accelerator and experiencing that instant torque for yourself."

The timing couldn't be better. Alabama currently has about 15,000 registered electric vehicles, a number that's climbing as more people discover the benefits. The university has already electrified part of its Crimson Ride bus fleet and brought in $210 million for transportation research through its Alabama Transportation Institute.

But Drive Electric Alabama isn't focused on research. It's focused on people making real decisions about their next car purchase.

The program highlights what matters to everyday drivers: lower fuel costs, reduced maintenance, longer vehicle life, and rebates from Alabama Power. For many families, the savings add up to thousands of dollars over a vehicle's lifetime.

The Ripple Effect

What makes this initiative special is how it meets people where they are. Instead of asking Alabamians to trust statistics or marketing materials, the program puts them in the driver's seat. That hands-on experience is already changing minds across the country as EV adoption grows.

The University of Alabama's involvement runs deeper than sponsorship. Its Alabama Mobility and Power Center works on improving battery technology and charging infrastructure, meaning the research happening on campus directly supports the vehicles people will test on Monday.

The event also features a vehicle showcase at Brock's Gap Brewing Company and a live concert with country band Deputy 5, turning what could be a simple test drive into a community celebration.

"Once you drive one, you'll understand why so many people are making the switch," Staley said. For thousands of Alabamians who've never felt electric acceleration or experienced the quiet smoothness of an EV, Monday might be the day that changes everything.
