Alaska Skier Gus Schumacher Takes 2nd World Cup Silver

Gus Schumacher is having the month of his life, and the timing couldn't be better.

The Anchorage native claimed his second World Cup medal in as many days Saturday, finishing second in a classic sprint race in Goms, Switzerland. It was the fifth medal of his career and third this season, proving the 25-year-old Alaskan has arrived as a genuine Olympic medal threat.

Schumacher's hot streak started on New Year's Eve with a victory in the Tour de Ski. After taking a quick break back home in Alaska, he returned to Europe and immediately landed on the podium twice in one weekend at the final World Cup stop before next month's Winter Olympics.

Saturday's silver medal marked another breakthrough. It was Schumacher's first podium finish in a classic-technique race, showing he's not just good in one style but truly elite in both skiing techniques.

Norway's Johannes Klaebo, widely considered the world's best skier, won gold with a commanding performance. But Schumacher made his own statement in the final stretch, surging past competitors to claim second place by more than two seconds over Sweden's bronze medalist.

"I'm really proud of adapting to a bit of a different sprint course and recognizing where my strengths were," Schumacher said. He credited his endurance on the demanding 1.5-kilometer course with two steep uphill climbs.
