Cancer survivors and volunteers gather around tables at First Baptist Church Albany planning celebration dinner

Albany Cancer Survivors to Be Celebrated at March Dinner

🦸 Hero Alert

Over 220 cancer survivors and their loved ones will gather for a free celebration dinner in Albany, Georgia, where hope takes center stage. The annual event brings together families touched by cancer to share meals, stories, and the kind of magic that only happens when survivors unite.

Cancer survivors across southwest Georgia will be honored at a special dinner on March 24, and organizers promise something magical is already in the air.

The American Cancer Society's Survivor's Dinner at First Baptist Church of Albany has become more than just a meal. It's a celebration of hope, resilience, and the lives that refused to give up.

"Cancer changes lives," said Cathy Shoemaker, event organizer and longtime nurse who has witnessed the disease's impact throughout her career. "We think the people who are survivors deserve to be celebrated."

More than 177 people have already registered for this year's dinner, nearly matching last year's attendance of 220. The event welcomes any cancer survivor and a guest at no cost.

First Baptist Church volunteers will prepare a special meal, while the evening includes country western themed activities like cornhole, horseshoes, and line dancing. Oncologist Jose Tongol will even perform original songs.

"The church always wants to give back, and one of the greatest gifts cancer survivors and the community at large can get is hope," said Spencer Kinkade, First Baptist's student pastor. "Cancer doesn't discriminate, but neither does hope."

The Ripple Effect

The dinner represents one of two major cancer awareness events in the region, alongside the annual Relay for Life. Together, they're creating a network of support that extends far beyond a single evening.

Kitchen Manager Danielle Green and cook Norma Jean Harris begin preparing the meal two months in advance. Green, who has watched family and friends face cancer, sees the dinner as an opportunity to give back to those who've fought so hard.

Volunteer Demetria Redding, who helps coordinate the event, said the gathering creates connections that last long after dessert is served. Survivors meet others who understand their journey, families find comfort in shared experiences, and hope spreads from table to table.

Cancer survivors and a guest can register by calling (229) 343-6130 before March 10. The 6 p.m. event costs nothing but promises everything: community, celebration, and the reminder that survival deserves to be honored.
