Alexandria Library Collects Black History, One Photo at a Time

Your grandmother's yearbook or that old church program tucked in a drawer could become part of recorded history.

Alexandria Library is hosting its fourth annual Black Family Reunion on Saturday, September 19, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free event at the Local History/Special Collections Branch combines a community party with an important mission: documenting Alexandria's African American history through family treasures.

Residents can bring yearbooks, photographs, programs, flyers, and other records to be digitized on site. The library returns all originals after scanning. Guests can also record brief oral histories to preserve family stories that might otherwise be lost.

The impact has been remarkable. The first reunion alone collected 2,300 photographs, 900 documents, an 18th century family Bible, and portraits dating back 150 years. These pieces now help tell a more complete story of Alexandria's past.

People don't need to wait for the event to participate. The library accepts digital donations online year round and schedules appointments by calling 703-746-1706.

When communities preserve their own histories, they create something powerful for future generations. Every photo and story added to Alexandria's archive helps students, researchers, and families connect with their heritage.
