Alyssa Thompson Scores Winner in USWNT's 8th SheBelieves Win

Alyssa Thompson proved that sometimes the best moments come when you refuse to give up on your shot.

The 21-year-old Chelsea forward fired a powerful strike into the upper corner in the 82nd minute to give the U.S. Women's National Team a 1-0 victory over Colombia at Sports Illustrated Stadium in New Jersey. The goal secured America's eighth SheBelieves Cup championship and capped a perfect tournament run with three wins and zero goals allowed.

Thompson's winner came from a quick passing sequence with teammates Lindsey Heaps and Jaedyn Shaw. After receiving the ball at the top of the penalty box, she took one controlling touch before unleashing a shot that rippled the back of the net.

"I wanted to get another shot on goal," Thompson said after being named tournament MVP. Earlier in the second half, a similar opportunity had curled wide, but she kept believing in the next chance.

The Ripple Effect

Thompson's confidence didn't appear overnight. Last September, she made the bold decision to leave Angel City FC and sign a five-year contract with Chelsea, moving overseas and away from her younger sister Gisele to pursue her dream at the highest level.

The move placed her alongside national team stars Naomi Girma and Catarina Macario at Chelsea, where she's become the team's leading scorer with 14 goals. Thompson credits her club teammates and the challenge of playing overseas for elevating her game to new heights.

"Being able to go to Chelsea was a huge move for me," Thompson said. She pointed to Girma and Macario as instrumental in building her confidence at both club and country level.

Head coach Emma Hayes praised Thompson's transformation over the past year. "The consistency in her play is a standout for me, being able to do things over 90 minutes and do it game after game, including a clutch moment like today," Hayes said.

The tournament showcased the USWNT's depth and resilience. The team defeated Canada 1-0, Argentina 2-0, and finally Colombia in three hard-fought matches that tested their composure and skill against world-class competition.
