Amateur Finds 10 Pounds of Viking Silver in Finland

Kalle Lappinen was sweeping his metal detector across a field in Sysmä, Finland, when he hit something extraordinary. Beneath his feet lay thousands of silver coins from the Viking Age, hidden for a millennium.

On September 3, Lappinen discovered the location of the massive silver hoard. The next day, archaeologists from Lahti Museums retrieved nearly 10 pounds of treasure from two birch bark containers buried 18 inches underground and 40 feet apart.

The trove includes thousands of silver coins along with a silver bracelet, clasp, bead, and fragments. Experts are calling it Finland's largest coin cache discovery from the Late Iron Age, spanning roughly 800 to 1300 AD.

Archaeologist Esko Tikkala, who led the retrieval, says the silver dates to the Viking Age period of 1000 to 1050 AD. Why someone buried such wealth remains a mystery, though Tikkala suggests it could have been a merchant safeguarding assets or a wealthy resident preparing for an attack.

For Lappinen, the moment was surreal. "Disbelief" hit first, he told reporters, followed by a rush of adrenaline at realizing the significance of what he'd found.

The amateur archaeologist typically searches for artifacts to confirm Iron Age settlements existed in the area. Discovering an actual hoard like this is rare and "fascinating," he said.
