Amazon Now Brings 30-Minute Grocery Delivery to London

Londoners can now get fresh groceries delivered to their homes faster than ordering takeout.

Amazon launched its first Amazon Now quick commerce site in the UK this week, promising delivery of thousands of everyday items in as fast as 30 minutes. The service started in London's Southwark area and brings the same speed that has already helped millions of shoppers in India and the UAE.

The journey from idea to reality took just six months. Elisa Michelin Salomon, who leads quick commerce operations for Amazon in Europe, shared that it all started with a small group gathered around a table in Bangalore in May 2025, figuring out how to bring the model to Europe.

What began as a handful of people grew into a massive collaboration across 57 different teams. They didn't just open a warehouse. They built an entirely new delivery network from scratch, creating fresh operations and a brand new last mile delivery system.

In India, Amazon Now already operates over 100 micro fulfillment centers and recently launched 10-minute delivery in Mumbai after successful rollouts in Bengaluru and Delhi. These compact warehouses stock the items people need most, positioned close to neighborhoods for lightning-fast fulfillment.

The Ripple Effect

This isn't just about getting milk delivered faster. Quick commerce creates jobs in local communities, from warehouse workers to delivery drivers navigating city streets. It helps people reclaim time spent on grocery runs, giving parents more moments with their kids and workers more flexibility in packed schedules.

The model also reduces food waste by allowing people to buy exactly what they need when they need it, rather than over-purchasing on weekly shopping trips. Smaller, more frequent orders mean fresher food and less thrown away.

For elderly or disabled residents who struggle with heavy grocery bags or long store trips, 30-minute delivery offers newfound independence. They can get fresh produce and essentials without leaving home or asking for help.

The London launch represents something bigger than retail innovation. It shows how ideas can jump continents, how teams can move mountains in months instead of years, and how technology can genuinely improve daily life.
