Amazon Rolls Out 50 Electric Semi Trucks in Germany

Amazon is turning its electric delivery dreams into reality across Europe, starting with 50 massive battery-powered semi trucks now hauling goods across Germany.

The retail giant just deployed the first 26 Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 electric trucks, with another 24 rolling out before the end of 2026. These aren't small delivery vans. They're full-size semi trucks weighing nearly 80,000 pounds when loaded, powered entirely by 621 kWh batteries.

Amazon is using the trucks for "middle-mile" routes, moving products between warehouses and urban areas on trips up to 310 miles per charge. The company is installing hundreds of fast chargers across the region that can juice the trucks from 20% to 80% battery in just over an hour.

Andreas Marschner, VP of Sustainable Operations at Amazon, calls it a milestone. "Electric solutions have already been widely used for some time in last-mile package delivery," he explains. "Now we can make even longer transport routes between fulfillment centers and urban areas more sustainable."

The electric trucks match the efficiency of Tesla's Semi, but they're already on real roads in real winter conditions. Mercedes-Benz designed proprietary electric drive axles that deliver impressive performance while maintaining range even in cold weather.

The Ripple Effect

Amazon is putting serious money behind this transition. The company is investing more than $1 billion across Europe to electrify and decarbonize its transportation network, with over $400 million dedicated specifically to German operations.

Those investments are already creating jobs. An analysis by Frontier Economics estimates Amazon's German operations have supported over 35,000 jobs and contributed up to $3.2 billion to Germany's economy.

The order is part of Amazon's largest electric truck purchase ever, totaling more than 200 Mercedes eActros 600s. Stina Fagerman, President of Mercedes-Benz Trucks' Customer Region Europe, says the partnership proves heavy-duty electric transport is moving from theory to practice.

Other delivery companies are watching closely as Amazon proves these trucks can handle demanding commercial routes.
