Amazon to Return 370M Liters of Water to German Communities
Amazon is launching two innovative water projects in Germany that will return up to 370 million liters of water annually to local communities through smart leak detection and wetland restoration. The initiatives combine cutting-edge technology with nature-based solutions to tackle urban water waste.
Amazon is bringing 370 million liters of water back to German communities through two projects that blend technology with nature.
The tech giant announced an urban leak detection program in Frankfurt and a wetland restoration effort in Bavaria's Spessart Forest. Together, these initiatives demonstrate how innovation can solve real environmental challenges facing cities today.
In Frankfurt, Amazon is partnering with water monitoring company Shayp to install smart sensors in 500 buildings by 2028 at zero cost to property owners. These Internet of Things devices will monitor water flow 24/7, catching leaks the moment they happen and preventing an estimated 320 million liters of water waste annually.
"As cities face increasing water challenges, we have a responsibility to be good water stewards," said Michael Hannisch, Amazon's head of technology in Germany. The sensors begin rolling out this year, bringing immediate benefits to one of Germany's largest cities.
The second project takes a completely different approach. Working with Danish environmental services company EcoTree, Amazon is restoring 200 hectares of wetland in the Spessart Forest near Würzburg.

The restoration will create six hectares of new wetland habitats that naturally slow water flow and boost groundwater recharge. When water filters back into the earth through these restored areas, the project will replenish more than 57 million liters annually by late 2027.
The wetlands bring bonus benefits beyond water. The habitats will support endangered species like amphibians and the black stork while stabilizing local climate conditions and storing carbon in the mixed forest ecosystem.
The Ripple Effect
These German projects are part of Amazon's larger commitment to return more water to communities than its data centers consume by 2030. The company now operates more than 45 water replenishment projects worldwide, each tailored to local needs.
Christian Bergius, managing director of EcoTree Germany, captured the urgency perfectly: "We're officially in an era of water extremes." His company is tackling the droughts and flooding threatening communities across Germany through ecosystem restoration.
The Frankfurt project also highlights another ripple. Shayp, the monitoring company, was selected for Amazon's 2025 Sustainability Accelerator program and is now expanding its work to additional Amazon sites across Europe.
Water scarcity affects billions globally, but solutions exist when technology companies invest in local communities. Frankfurt residents will soon benefit from smarter infrastructure, while Bavarian ecosystems gain the wetlands they need to thrive.
