Electric vehicle sales took a beating in the U.S. over the past year, but something unexpected is happening: Americans are actually becoming more open to driving electric.
A new study from HERE Technologies and SBD Automotive shows that 12% of Americans now see zero barriers to EV adoption, double the 6% from last year. Even more encouraging, fewer people are worried about running out of charge.
The shift comes as the U.S. added 31,600 new public charging stations over the past year. Charging power jumped 47%, meaning drivers can top up their batteries much faster than before.
Range anxiety, once the biggest concern for potential EV buyers, is fading fast. Worries about driving range dropped 15% compared to last year, while concerns about charging availability fell 14%.
The change in attitudes isn't just about gas prices or saving the planet. Americans increasingly view EVs as a smart financial decision, with 31% saying better value is their top reason for considering an electric vehicle.

Current EV owners are helping spread the word too. Nearly half of non-EV drivers now have positive feelings about public charging availability, up from just 28% last year.
Robert Fisher, Senior Consulting Manager at SBD Automotive, notes that consumer confidence typically predicts purchasing behavior. The growing positive sentiment suggests sales could follow once other market conditions stabilize.
The Bright Side
The infrastructure improvements are paying off in real ways. Drivers report that charging stations are becoming more reliable, faster, and easier to find at everyday locations like restaurants and convenience stores.
Among non-EV drivers, 10% fewer plan to buy gas vehicles for their next car. Another 8% more would choose electric if the price and features matched traditional cars.
The practical benefits are winning people over where environmental messages couldn't. Better performance and lower operating costs tied at 29% as motivators, right behind value for money.
Public charging facilities continue expanding across America, making electric driving more convenient for apartment dwellers and those without home charging options. The combination of more stations and faster charging is removing real barriers that held people back.
As charging networks grow and Americans see their neighbors successfully making the switch, the path to wider EV adoption is getting clearer every day.
