Ancient 'Seated' Skeletons Found Under French School

Imagine building a playground and discovering how people buried their loved ones over 2,000 years ago. That's exactly what happened at the Josephine Baker school in Dijon, France, where archaeologists found ancient skeletons arranged in a rare seated position.

The discovery includes up to six new graves dating back to the Gallic period, when Celtic tribes called Gauls lived in the region between 500 BC and 50 BC. These aren't your typical burials. The people were positioned sitting upright at the bottom of circular pits, backs against the eastern wall, facing west.

Their arms rested along their torsos with hands near their pelvis. Their legs were tightly flexed in asymmetrical positions, creating a distinctive posture archaeologists rarely encounter.

This marks the second time the school site has revealed these unusual burials. Researchers first found 13 similar graves in 2024. The new graves form a parallel line to the earlier discovery, suggesting this was a deliberate burial ground with specific meaning.

What makes these burials even more intriguing is what's missing. The graves contained almost no personal items or offerings, except for a single black stone armband dated to the third century BC.

The Bright Side

While some earlier skeletons showed signs of violence, this discovery helps researchers understand Gallic culture in ways written history never could. Only about 50 seated burials have been found across a dozen archaeological sites, making each new discovery incredibly valuable.

These burial grounds were typically located near elite residences, sanctuaries, or places of worship, set apart from standard cemeteries. Researchers are still investigating whether these individuals were warriors, members of elite families, or figures connected to religious practices.

The skeletons are remarkably well preserved, giving scientists an extraordinary opportunity to learn about ancient health, diet, and daily life. Children attending school directly above these graves are literally walking over a classroom of history waiting to teach us about human civilization.

France's national archaeology institution continues studying the site, piecing together clues about who these people were and why their community chose this special way to lay them to rest.
