Angelique Kidjo Gets First Hollywood Star for Black African

Under sunny California skies, 66-year-old Angelique Kidjo unveiled her star on Hollywood Boulevard, becoming the first Black African to receive this honor. The moment marked a breakthrough for African music on one of entertainment's most famous stages.

Film stars and music industry leaders gathered to celebrate the Beninese-French singer's achievement. After thanking her team and family, Kidjo did what she does best: she erupted into song, holding the crowd in rapt attention.

"We Africans don't know what we've given to the world," Kidjo told the audience. "Without us, there's no music possible on this planet."

Her journey to this moment spans over 40 years and 18 albums. Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people, while the BBC recognized her as one of Africa's 50 most iconic figures.

Harvey Mason Jr. of the Recording Academy praised Kidjo as a "rare artist" whose work proves music is about connection, not just entertainment. "This star is a permanent symbol of your achievements," he said. Actor Willem Dafoe, who attended the ceremony, recalled the first time he saw Kidjo perform live. "Her music, her dancing, her commitment were incredible," the "Platoon" star said. "She is, without a doubt, the hardest-working woman in show business."
