Angola Doctor Performs First Robotic Cancer Surgery

An Angolan doctor achieved a medical milestone this week by leading the country's first robotic cancer surgery, marking a major leap forward for healthcare across southern Africa.

Dr. Feliciano Direito performed three robot-assisted prostate surgeries at Luanda's Cardeal Dom Alexandre do Nascimento Hospital Complex, working alongside international specialist Dr. Vipul Patel. Each procedure took about two hours, with no complications reported.

The three patients, ages 63 to 68, are recovering well and showing positive progress. All underwent radical prostatectomies, a complex cancer treatment that traditionally required large incisions and longer recovery times.

"The balance is very positive," Dr. Direito shared after the procedures. "It was an honor to work again with Dr. Patel, an international reference who has contributed to the development of robotic surgery in the country."

Health Minister Sílvia Lutucuta personally attended the surgeries to witness this historic moment. She congratulated the medical teams and emphasized how this achievement demonstrates Angola's growing capabilities in advanced medical care.

The robotic surgery campaign plans to complete 50 procedures across general surgery, urology, and gynecology by May 7th. Fifteen more robotic surgeries are scheduled in this second phase alone.
