Angola Factory Produces 400,000 Eyeglass Lenses in Two Years

Getting eyeglasses shouldn't require waiting weeks for imported lenses, and one factory in Angola is changing that reality for millions across Africa.

Oftalmed factory in Luanda has produced over 400,000 ophthalmic lenses since opening in January 2024. The facility cranks out 600 lenses daily on average, sometimes reaching 900 during busy periods.

The $8.8 million facility spans 1,800 square meters and uses cutting-edge technology that meets international medical device standards. What started with 24 employees has grown to 50 workers across multiple departments in just two years.

The factory transforms raw materials into finished prescription lenses right in Angola. This means people who need glasses can get them faster and cheaper than waiting for imports from overseas suppliers.

Administrator Amyn Habib says the first two years focused on training staff, earning technical certifications, and building solid production processes. The hard work paid off as Oftalmed became a leading distributor through strategic partnerships across the visual health sector.

The Ripple Effect

The impact reaches far beyond Angola's borders. Oftalmed plans to install a second production line soon, pending final technology validation.

That expansion will boost output enough to start exporting to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, and Portuguese-speaking African countries. Formal discussions with these regional partners have already begun.

More production means more jobs too. The new line will create additional positions requiring technical specialization, giving more Angolans valuable skills in medical manufacturing.

The factory addresses a real problem across Africa where many people struggle to access affordable vision care. By producing lenses locally with shorter delivery times, Oftalmed reduces dependence on expensive imports that can take weeks or months to arrive.

Each lens produced represents someone who can see clearly to work, study, or simply enjoy daily life. The expansion promises to multiply that impact across multiple countries where quality eyeglasses remain out of reach for many families.
